This is a style of art I did throughout high school that we just called "highlighter art." Me and one of my friends used the brand new liquid highlighters to accent black ink lines and drawings. This particular one is some silly phrase I probably saw online "If frogs had wings they wouldn't bump their butts on the ground." Ink on notebook paper, Circa 2006 | A woven self portrait I made in one of my college weaving classes. All of the yarn used for this was from yarn I already had. The measurements are based off of my torso size at the time of weaving and there are different words and names woven into the cloth with binary that I felt represented me at the time. There is no written record of what words I used as a nod to how we forget the pieces of our past selves that seem indelible at the time. Mixed fiber, Fall 2010 | This is one of the pieces from the beginning drawing class I took to complete my art minor in college. This particular drawing is of an ice cream scoop we had inherited from my great grandmother. Luckily I took the drawing class as a distance course so I had to scan the art for it to send in which means I have a better record of it than I might otherwise. Graphite on sketch paper, October 2011 |

Another practice sheet from beginning drawing feature some noses and the very tired eyes of a college student. Instead of doing full body figure drawings for this class we did a lot of close ups of facial features and this is the nose section. I still think it's pretty difficult to draw just noses without making them look like weird potatoes. Graphite on sketch paper, October 2011 | More beginning drawing work, this time ears. I remember the teacher saying she liked how I made the piercings on the one ear actually look like holes. Graphite on sketch paper, November 2011 | Another body part sheet from beginning drawing. Doing these lips was my favorite one of the batch! Graphite on sketch paper, November 2011 |
A little bit of a silly drawing I made after a coworker said "aw corn nuts" at work when something didn't go his way. It made me think of the Adam West era Batman exclamations. Watercolor and ink, November 2011 | A gift for a friend based around a conversation we had about how we think Worf would make a pretty good babysitter. This is him reading my friend her favorite kid's book, Where the Wild Things Are, while she winds down for bed in her jammies. Watercolor and ink, November 2011 | This is one drawing from a set I did for some christmas cards in 2011. This one feature's a friend at the time's step-daughter threatening to shank you with a candy cane if the gifts aren't up to snuff. Ink and watercolor, December 2011. |
For a long portion of time I was absolutely obsessed with making tiny polymer clay food into jewelry! This is one of my favorites - a tiny chocolate heart cake with strawberries, whipped cream, and sprinkles on a plate decorated with strawberry sauce. I turned this one into a necklace and ended up selling it, and many other creations, through the bookstore I used to work at! December 2011 | This is one of the early digital drawings I did, inspired by a conversation I had with an online friend about how hobbits rebel by running away with Gandalf. This was with a bamboo wacom tablet that I still have, but unfortunately has stopped being supported. Digital, January 2012 | Some more getting used to digital drawing with this one! This is Matt Smith as The Doctor from Doctor Who along with a proverb that I thought suited The Doctor's storyline at the time. Digital, January 2012 |
A digital drawing based off of a portrait photo of Martin Luther King Jr with one of his quotes. "Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity." Digital, January 2012 | In 2012 I used my wacom tablet to make a little series of Valentine's cards that I attached candy to and gave out to coworkers and classmates. I was doing anthropology and history classes then and working at a bookstore which explains some of the nerdy stuff. Here's one of them featuring a dalek from Doctor Who saying "affectionate." Digital, January 2012 | Another one of the Valentine's cards I made featuring Darwin, of evolutionary science fame, saying that you're the natural selection. Digital, February 2012 |
Another Valentine I did, I'm not a huge Star Wars person but I do love puns and thought this one was funny. Yoda only valentine for me! Digital, February 2012 | More pun Valentine's! I just think this cow is so cute - utterly delightful you might say. Digital, February 2012 | One of my very brief forays into oil painting. I got some for a project for my anthropology of art class. This is one of the test runs I did on canvas board to try to get used to a material I hadn't used before. This was based off of a silly conversation I had with a friend about how bug-eyed goldfish looked like that because they could actually see ghosts and would be a good addition to ghost hunting teams. Oil paints on canvas board, February 2012 |
I am a huge Hunger Games nerd so when the bookstore I was working at wanted a sign for a display I was all over it. I probably spent way longer on this than was necessary but I had fun making it! Digital, March 2012 | This is a label I made for a tea site I've been using since 2012 that allows you to make custom tea blends. This one is cinnamon bun! If you want to check out the tea you can find it here https://www.adagio.com/signature_blend/blend.html?blend=21023 Digital, April 2012 | This was a piece I made for an art group one of my friends invited me to take part in. I think this was the first month I participated in and decided to do a vampire pinup girl. I had a whole series of them planned after this one that fell by the wayside. Digital, April 2012 |
This was another piece for the art group I was in. I don't remember what the prompts were anymore but I had fun playing with a kind of sketchy style for this one. It was based off of an old photo I found of a guy who was hiding a cat in his beard and the little cat face bewitched me. Digital, April 2012 | This is a silly drawing I did as an inside joke with my friends when I was taking Human Osteology in college. It is not an easy subject and especially so if you are not good with math. This was also the inspiration for the brain dead emote I have on my twitch channel now! Digital, April 2012 | This is a set of bookmarks I made on some sort of nice art paper I got from somewhere but I don't remember exactly where. I did a set of Doctor Who themed drawings and did a small online giveaway for them! Watercolor, April 2012 |
This was a piece for the art group and the prompt was Window. This is a drawing based off of a photo of myself at the time when I was starting to struggle with the intense depression that would steal a lot of my art years from me. Digital, May 2012 | The second mythical pin up I did! I was really proud of this one and still love the kind of shading I did in this. It's kind of a silly idea that Medusa would turn her own pet bird into stone on accident, but pinups are kind of silly anyway. Digital May 2012 | This is a dice bag I made for my brother to test a pattern I made! I also braided the cord for it. he still uses this dicebag over ten years later and let me tell you that thing is stuffed full of dice. I'm pretty impressed with the strength of my hand sewing! Quilting cotton, felt, cotton embroidery floss May 2012 |
This is a silly little comic drawing I did while I was studying for a history class I was taking. FDR truly gave everyone a union and we have squandered his good works. Ink on sketchbook paper, June 2012 | One for the art group for the prompt favorite Disney character. I couldn't pick just one so we have Kronk from Emperor's New Groove being a scout leader with Meeko from Pocahontas and a small scout with Gus Gus from Cinderella. Digital, June 2012. | The prompt word for this one was beach and I decided to draw a scene from The Hunger Games where Peeta gives Katniss a pearl he finds in an oyster which ends up representing the core of the love and appreciation they have for each other even when it's shattered by the story. Digital, July 2012 |
A silly little piece comparing dinosaur names to marvel characters Loki and Thor! Digital, July 2012 | The prompt for this piece was what item you would be turned to in the Beast's manor from Beauty and the Beast. This is back when I was a heavy drinker and a friend suggested I'd be a flirtatious wine glass which was a hilarious concept. Digital, September 2012. | This is my most popular sticker design to date! It was up on my RedBubble for over a decade and was always my best seller. The joke is that the bones here are from an Australopithecus and not a Homo genus. The bones are therefore no homo. I hope to be able to redesign this one sometime! Digital, October 2012 |
This was a test page I did when I downloaded some new digital pens for Photoshop. I've never been big on figure drawing but it's fun to play with sometimes! Digital, November 2012 | I wish I had a better picture of this one but I'm not sure where this sketchbook ended up. This was a drawing I did one night when I couldn't sleep because I was thinking about someone. Colored pencil and ink on sketchbook paper, November 2012 | I remember doing this piece while I was sitting in a cafe on campus while I was in college. I was having a lot of nightmares around this time because my mental health was getting worse and one of the recurring things was someone from my past that I had broken ties with coming back to antagonize me. Colored pencil and ink on sketchbook paper, November 2012 |
This is page 1 of 3 of.a comic I made about my nightmares and is a precursor to the Visual Dream Journal project I started in 2021. Ink on sketchbook paper November 2021 | Page 2 of 3 from the nightmare comic. Ink on sketchbook paper, November 2012 | Page 3 of 3 from the nightmare comic. Ink on sketchbook paper, November 2012 |
A self portrait I did with the same "missing pieces" as I used in my Window piece. It was a recurring theme where I felt like there were essential parts of me missing that made some of my essence leak out in a way I couldn't control. Digital, January 2013 | A one page comic about how puffins get back into the air from the water even though their bones are denser than most birds making them heavier. I found it a very apt metaphor for how hard I was fighting to stay flying while depression was weighing me down. Ink and watercolor on sketchbook paper, March 2013 | This is another one of my favorite polymer clay food creations! A very tiny tray of tea and cookies that I made into a necklace. I sewing the tiny little napkin by hand too. Polymer clay, plastic, paper, cotton, March 2013 |
I think I made this based off of something I said to a coworker about how I wasn't riding into the sunset when I left a shift I was grumping off, but I don't fully remember. I still have this image on my phone and use it as a reaction image sometimes. Watercolor and ink on 140lb coldpress watercolor paper, April 2013 | This is one of a set of color study scarves I did for my final weaving class as part of my art minor. I did a warp of black, warm grey, cool grey, and white and then did different color schemes for the warp to see how all the colors interacted together. Very similar to a color wheel you might do with painting to see how your colors worked together. There was a set of 8. This is a triadic color scheme. 50/50 merino wool/silk, May 2012 | Another color study scarf in magenta, orange, and yellow. 50/50 merino wool/silk, May 2012 |
Monochromatic color study scarf. 50/50 merino wool/silk, May 2012 | Analogous color study scarf with blue, green, and purple. 50/50 merino wool/silk, May 2012 | Analogous color study scarf in green, lilac, and blue. 50/50 merino wool/silk, May 2012 |
One of the typography pieces I made for some friends who were graduating from college the same time I was. I asked my friends for a song lyric they felt like summed up their feelings on graduating. This was for my friend Kae who sat with me during the ceremony and we got pictures together after walking! Watercolor and ink on 100lb Bristol, May 2014 | This was for my best friend Jon who was graduating with his masters while I was graduating with my undergrad degree. Jon has passed now and I think of him every time I hear this song. He was such an incredible hard worker and managed to blast his way through an undergrad and masters degree in less time than I took with just my undergrad. An absolutely incredible person I was so blessed to know. Watercolor and ink on 100lb bristol, May 2014 | My final project in my last weaving class. This is another abstract self portrait. Like my first one the measurements of the piece are based off of my torso. For the base I used a cone of alpaca yarn that I'd bought to weave my grandfather a blanket but he passed before I could get it done. The ominous missing piece makes another appearance here. I actually cut the fabric with a pair of scissors and handed the piece to my weaving teacher. Mixed fibers, Winter 2013. |
When my depression was really bad pretty much the only social interaction I could manage was through Twitch, a gaming and chatting platform. These two quotes are from one of my favorite streamers Tinner10Tin who still streams! He's a super nice guy and was very gentle with me when I was suffering so badly. I wanted to show some thanks by making him some art, some of the only art I'd made in a long time. Watercolor pencil and ink on 100lb bristol, June 2016 | This is another piece for a streamer I watched and still consider one of my closest friends JickNonsense. He had a saying that every zubat has crobat potential, which is a great example of his natural positivity. This was a short lived sticker design on my RedBubble and Jick is actually the only person who has a sticker of it! Digital, October 2018 | This was an inside joke while someone I was watching was hunting for a shiny lickitung - whose most prominent feature is its tongue and turns from a pink to a golden color. Digital, November 2018 |
Another sticker design from a JickNonsense saying! When shiny hunting in Let's Go Eevee it's very easy for a shiny you aren't looking for to show up. Jick's method of letting them go was to give them a nice berry and then send them on their way without catching them. We called it the Eat n Yeet! Digital, May 2019 | This is a small cross stitch I designed and made as a gift for Ginger Minj, a drag queen known for being a contestant on season 7 of RuPaul's Drag Race. Ginger Minj was one of my favorites and came to Alaska for pride one year so I bought tickets to do a meet and greet to give her this as a gift! She even posted on her instagram that it has a place of honor next to her coffee maker! Cotton on Aida, June 2018 | This was the basis for an emote design I made that I ended up never using. It's a tangela doing the classic eyes emoji 👀 Digital, June 2019 |
I wanted to teach myself how to do seamlessly repeating patterns in my digital art program so decided to make one with all the different types of pokeballs. Digital, June 2019 | This is a set of pride wooloo, a sheep pokemon, that I made as a play on "the black sheep of the family" for pride! Pictured here are pansexual, bisexual, asexual, and transgender pride flags. Digital, June 2019 | More wooloo showing: Sappho inspired lesbian, generqueer, lipstick lesbian, and sunset lesbian pride flags. digital June 2019 |
Wooloo pride sheep featuring simplified rainbow, original 1978 rainbow, Philly rainbow, and the queer chevron pride flags. Digital, June 2019 | Pride wooloo showing: nonbinary, aromantic, agender, and genderfluid pride flags. Digital, June 2019 | A birthday gift for a friend who really likes the pokemon klefki! Klefki traditionally has just keys but I added some other keyrings to personalize it. Digital, June 2019 |
This is a song lyric from one of my favorite bands Coheed and Cambria, which my friend Jick introduced me to. This lyric is from the song Hush on their album Year of the Black Rainbow. Digital, August 2019 | Another dice bag using the same pattern that I developed to make the one for my brother. This one was a gift for the DM of the one and only D&D campaign I have ever played. Quilting cotton, flannel, and felt, August 2019 | The outside of a dice bag I made for Jick, who was in the D&D campaign with me. Quilting cotton and velvet, September 2019 |
The inside of a dice bag I made for Jick, who was in the D&D campaign with me. Quilting cotton and velvet, September 2019 | One of the prompts for a Dralloween challenge I did part of with one of my friends. The prompt word for this one was cleaver. Watercolor and ink, 100lb bristol | A drawlloween piece for broken and skull. The pokemon cubone has some lore that it wears its own mother's skull as a helmet so I placed the skull next to a pokemon egg that's just starting to crack open. Digital, October 2019 |
A drawlloween piece for the prompt Candle. this is a return to the kind of style I did for highlighter art back when I was in highschool and shows more clearly the way I was starting to come out of my long depression funk. I'm not cured, it's still there yelling in my head everyday, but this is when I clearly started seeing that there was light in the world again. I don't know that I would have as clear of an outline of my mental health if I didn't do art like this. Ink on 100lb bristol, October | Drawlloween piece for prompts Ghost and Boo. I decided to make a "ghost of fashions past" with some of the fabric patterns that are seen as particularly obnoxious. Watercolor and ink on 140lb coldpress watercolor paper, October 2019 | A piece for prompts graveyard and death mask. This is the pokemon yamask who is said to be the soul of someone passed carrying their own face as a death mask. The idea here is that the yamask is watching his wife mourn his death while staying out of sight so she can move on without guilt. Watercolor and ink on 140lb coldpress watercolor paper, October 2019 |
The drawlloween piece for prompts Potion and Cauldron. I still really love how this piece turned out to the point that it's a sticker in my shop and featured on my website for the Art by Year sorting! Watercolor and ink on 140lb coldpress watercolor paper, October 2019 | This is a gift I made for my brother for one of his Pokemon VGC teams. He called his team the Anchorage Dhelmise, trying to make it sound like a sports team, and I made this as a surprise for him for his birthday! He still uses it as his PFP which is such an honor. Digital, June 2019 | This is a repeating pattern I made after a joke about making Jick's official plaid. He wears a lot of flannel shirts and plaid is actually one of my favorite patterns to weave. I actually have a draft of what this weaving pattern would look like tucked away somewhere for when I have access to a floor loom again. This features one of Jick's favorite pokemon Grumpig. Digital, June 2019 |
This was a commission from my brother to make a discord logo for a pokemon competitive league he was running in Patterrz community. I loved getting to draw Patterrz' little mascot, such a cutie! Digital, November 2019 | This is a PFP I made as a commission for my friend featuring the awareness ribbon for a chronic condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Digital, November 2019 |
